Forcing shy children to behave like extroverts will only increase their distress. Allowing shy students to take small, ‘safe’ risks will allow them to imagine their way into a less frightening world. Shy people need help not just for their emotional well-being but for their physical health too. In social situations, a shy persons body can easily become caught up in a distressing feedback loop of shame, awkwardness and discomfort.
